Osteoarthritis of the knee joint


Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of knee arthritis. OA is usually a slowly progressive degenerative disease in which the joint cartilage gradually wears away. It most often affects middle-aged and older people.



Cause -


1. Mechanical injury
2. Excess body weight
3. Loss of strength in the muscles supporting a joint
4. Impairment of peripheral nerves
5. Leading to sudden or uncoordinated movements

If there is pain or stiffness in your shoulder when u do these things, It can be Periarthritis.

Classification- -


1. Primary
2. Secondary

Symptoms -


• The pain associated with arthritis develops gradually, although sudden onset is also possible.
• The joint may become stiff and swollen, making it difficult to bend or straighten the knee.
• Pain and swelling are worse in the morning or after a period of inactivity.
• Pain may also increase after activities such as walking, stair climbing, or kneeling.
• The pain may often cause a feeling of weakness in the knee, resulting in a "locking" or "buckling."
• Changes in the weather also affect the degree of pain from arthritis.
• OA can cause a crackling noise (called "crepitus") when the affected joint is moved
• joint effusion of the knee occur.

Treatment-



Life style Modification-


1. losing weight
2. switching from running or jumping exercises
3. swimming or cycling
4. minimizing activities that aggravate the condition, such as climbing stairs.

Physiotherapy -


• Exercises can help to increase range of motion and flexibility
• Strengthening Exerises can help to strengthen the muscles in the leg.
• Physical therapy and exercise are often effective in reducing pain and improving function
• Physiotherapy can help to develop an individualized exercise program that meets your needs and lifestyle
• The use of orthoses ( splints, braces or insoles) can reduce the symptoms of OA.
• Functional, gait, and balance training has been recommended to address impairments of position sense, balance, and strength in individuals with lower extremity arthritis as these can contribute to higher falls in older individuals
• Reduce the pain with the help of modalities.
• Hydrotherapy.
